PPG Gear Upgrades for the Nissan R35 GT-R GR6 Transmission

As Nissan R35 GT-R power levels continue to climb, building a GR6 transmission that can reliably handle the increased load becomes increasingly important. Upgraded clutches and other GR6 components are part of the equation, but for serious high-horsepower builds, the factory transmission gears eventually become an area that deserves attention.

At ATR Performance, PPG transmission gears are our preferred gear upgrade for high-performance Nissan R35 GT-R GR6 transmissions.

PPG offers both helical-cut and straight-cut GR6 gearsets, allowing us to match the transmission build to the vehicle’s horsepower, intended use and performance goals.

For most high-performance street cars, we generally recommend PPG helical gears for applications up to approximately 1,500 horsepower. Several of our customers have successfully pushed PPG helical gears considerably beyond that level, but as power and track usage increase, our recommendations become more application-specific.

For 2,000+ horsepower R35 GT-Rs that see regular drag-strip or other competition use, we generally recommend stepping up to a PPG straight-cut gearset.

The goal isn’t simply to install the strongest parts available. It’s to build the right GR6 transmission for the car.

Why Upgrade the R35 GT-R GR6 Transmission Gears?

The Nissan GT-R’s GR6 dual-clutch transmission is an impressive piece of engineering. In factory form, it was designed around a vehicle making a fraction of the horsepower produced by today’s modified R35s.

Modern GT-R builds can easily reach four-digit horsepower, while extreme drag and roll-racing combinations can exceed 2,000 horsepower.

As power, torque and vehicle acceleration increase, the loads placed on the transmission gears increase substantially as well.

An upgraded gearset becomes especially important for cars that repeatedly experience high-load conditions such as:

  • Hard launches
  • Drag racing
  • Roll racing
  • High-boost operation
  • Aggressive shifting
  • Repeated track use
  • High-torque engine combinations
  • 1,000+ horsepower builds

For these applications, PPG GR6 gears provide an upgrade path beyond the capabilities of the factory Nissan gearset.

PPG Helical Gears for the R35 GT-R GR6

For the majority of high-performance street-driven Nissan GT-Rs, PPG helical gears are our preferred GR6 gear upgrade.

Helical gears maintain a design similar in principle to the factory gear arrangement, with angled teeth that provide smoother and quieter operation compared with a straight-cut racing gearset.

This makes them particularly well suited to powerful GT-Rs that still spend significant time on the street.

When Do We Recommend PPG Helical Gears?

At ATR Performance, we generally recommend PPG helical GR6 gears for R35 GT-Rs producing up to approximately 1,500 horsepower.

That doesn’t mean 1,500 HP represents a hard mechanical limit.

In fact, several of our customers have successfully run PPG helical gears at considerably higher power levels.

Horsepower alone doesn’t determine how difficult a particular application is on the transmission. Vehicle weight, torque, tire, launch strategy, drivetrain setup and how frequently the car is raced can all influence the loads experienced by the GR6.

A 1,500 HP street car that occasionally sees a roll-racing event can present a very different transmission requirement from a similarly powered car making repeated hard launches at the drag strip.

For this reason, we consider 1,500 HP a practical recommendation rather than an absolute limitation.

PPG Helical Gears Are Ideal For:

  • High-horsepower street-driven R35 GT-Rs
  • Builds up to approximately 1,500 HP
  • Street/track combinations
  • Roll-racing GT-Rs
  • Owners who want increased gear strength without the characteristics of straight-cut gears
  • Cars where noise and street manners remain important

For many modified GT-Rs, PPG helical gears provide the best combination of increased capability and street-friendly operation.

PPG Straight-Cut Gears for the R35 GT-R GR6

At extreme power levels, particularly when a vehicle is regularly subjected to hard launches and track use, the priorities begin to change.

For 2,000+ horsepower R35 GT-Rs with regular track usage, ATR Performance generally recommends a PPG straight-cut GR6 gearset.

Straight-cut gears use teeth that run directly across the gear rather than at an angle. This design is commonly associated with dedicated racing transmissions and is better suited to applications where maximum performance and durability take priority over noise and refinement.

The tradeoff is straightforward: straight-cut gears are noticeably louder than helical gears.

For a dedicated race car, that usually isn’t a concern. For a GT-R driven primarily on the street, it may be.

When Do We Recommend PPG Straight-Cut Gears?

A typical candidate might be an R35 GT-R making 2,000, 2,500 or more horsepower that regularly sees the drag strip and experiences repeated high-load launches and shifts.

At this level, the transmission isn’t simply dealing with a high horsepower number. It’s repeatedly being asked to transfer extreme power through a heavy AWD vehicle on a tire capable of putting that power to the ground.

That’s where our priorities shift toward the PPG straight-cut configuration.

PPG Straight-Cut Gears Are Ideal For:

  • 2,000+ HP R35 GT-Rs
  • Dedicated drag cars
  • GT-Rs with frequent track use
  • Extreme-horsepower builds
  • Applications experiencing repeated hard launches
  • Competition vehicles where drivetrain strength takes priority over gear noise and street refinement

For these cars, the additional noise of a straight-cut transmission is generally a worthwhile tradeoff.

PPG Helical vs. Straight-Cut GR6 Gears: Which Should You Choose?

The right PPG gearset depends on more than the number displayed on a dyno sheet.

For a 1,000–1,500 HP street-driven R35 GT-R, we would generally recommend PPG helical gears.

Even above 1,500 HP, a helical PPG gearset may remain an appropriate choice depending on the vehicle’s usage. We have customers running considerably more power successfully on PPG helical gears.

For a 2,000+ HP GT-R that regularly sees the track, however, we generally recommend moving to PPG straight-cut gears.

In simple terms:

Up to approximately 1,500 HP:
PPG helical gears are our typical recommendation.

Above approximately 1,500 HP:
The decision becomes increasingly dependent on how the vehicle is used.

2,000+ HP with regular track use:
PPG straight-cut gears are our preferred recommendation.

There is intentionally some overlap between these categories. A GR6 transmission should be built around the actual application rather than an arbitrary horsepower cutoff.

Building a Complete High-Horsepower GR6 Transmission

Upgrading the gears is only one part of building a reliable high-horsepower GR6.

The appropriate transmission combination depends on the vehicle’s power level, torque, intended use and existing modifications. A complete GR6 build may involve upgrades to multiple areas of the transmission rather than simply replacing the factory gears.

At ATR Performance, our goal is to build the transmission around the application.

A street-driven 1,200 HP GT-R does not need the same GR6 configuration as a 2,500 HP drag car, and installing race-oriented components where they aren’t necessary can introduce compromises without providing a meaningful benefit.

That’s why we look at horsepower, torque, vehicle usage and future goals when recommending a PPG transmission package.

PPG GR6 Gears for Street, Roll Racing and Drag Racing

One of the advantages of the PPG lineup is the ability to choose a gear configuration appropriate for how the GT-R is actually used.

High-Horsepower Street GT-R

For a powerful street car, maintaining reasonable transmission noise and drivability is usually important.

PPG helical gears are typically our recommendation.

Street & Roll-Racing GT-R

Roll-racing cars can make tremendous horsepower without experiencing the same launch loads as a dedicated drag car.

Depending on power and the rest of the drivetrain combination, PPG helical gears may remain an excellent choice even beyond our typical 1,500 HP recommendation.

Dedicated Drag GT-R

A dedicated drag car presents a very different challenge.

Repeated hard launches, high torque and aggressive shifts place substantial loads on the GR6 transmission.

Once we’re dealing with a 2,000+ HP R35 GT-R that regularly sees the track, we generally recommend PPG straight-cut gears.

Choosing the Right GR6 Transmission Upgrade

There is no single GR6 transmission build that’s right for every modified R35 GT-R.

That’s especially true today, when one customer may be building a 900 HP street car while another is trying to put more than 2,000 horsepower through the same basic transmission platform.

Our general PPG recommendations are simple:

PPG Helical GR6 Gearset
Recommended for most street and performance R35 GT-Rs up to approximately 1,500 HP, with several ATR customers successfully operating them at substantially higher power levels.

PPG Straight-Cut GR6 Gearset
Recommended for 2,000+ HP GT-Rs with regular track usage, where maximum performance and durability take priority over transmission noise and street refinement.

Between those two scenarios, we evaluate the complete vehicle and how it’s going to be used before making a recommendation.
